Climbing the tall iron gate was easy, though the spikes at the top were tricky. My heart pounded when I dropped into the dark back yard on the other side, ready to scale the gate again if an alarm went off.
It’s just a quick dip in their pool, I thought to myself. It’s 2:00am and they’re out of town. They’ll never even know. What’s the harm, anyway?
All was silent. The gate into the backyard was at the end of a walkway along the side of the Mason’s house, the most opulent home in the neighborhood. Towering cedar hedges surrounded the expansive yard, making it very private. The back of the house loomed dark over a stone patio with outdoor furniture in shadow. I peered through the sliding patio doors into the kitchen. Clocks on appliances glowed, but there was no one.
The enormous pool took up most of the yard. The water glittered dark and inviting, reflecting the dim light from distant streetlamps and the pervasive glow of the city. At the far end of the yard sat a large wooden shed that looked almost like a child’s playhouse.
I felt guilty being there, but my parents were away, all my friends were out of town, and the damn heatwave that had squatted over the city for weeks had driven me crazy. I couldn’t wait to get into the pool and cool off.
While walking towards the deep end and looking into the dark water, hurried footsteps came from the dark by the hedge. Someone slammed into my side, toppling me into the inky cool water.
I fought for the surface, every sound muffled. Emerging, I treaded water, sputtering and blowing stinging chlorinated water from my nose, turning all around looking for the attacker.
A woman’s voice pierced the dark. “You picked the wrong house to rob, fucker. Stay there and throw whatever you have on you onto the deck of the pool. Knife, gun—everything.”
My guts tightened sickeningly. I’d just finished my first year of college and was waiting for my summer job to start. A police record for criminal trespass would ruin everything.
“I don’t have any weapons!” I said. “I’m not a burglar! I live a few blocks away. With my parents. They’re friends of the Masons. I just wanted to cool off, that’s all. Mr. Mason invited me to use the pool anytime.”
The voice said, “Then he would have given you the combination to the gate.”
“Well, he did invite me. Okay… it was when I was fourteen. And was to be only when they were home. But they’re at their summer cottage or somewhere. I didn’t think they’d mind.”
After a pause, she said, “Get your clothes off. Throw them on the deck.”
“The fuck? Why?”
“No weapons? That’s how you prove it.”
“There’s no damn way I’m going to—”
“Handcuffed in a patrol car in soaked clothes will be uncomfortable, don’t you think? Strip. Do it! Do it now!”
I had to submerge to pull off my t-shirt, then again to remove my shorts, underwear and shoes. I flung each into the dark toward the voice.
Treading water, I waited, feeling foolish and exposed, my mind feverishly inventing apologies, excuses and pleas for mercy.
“No wallet or ID,” said the voice. “No phone, either.”
“Didn’t think I’d need any of that. We don’t have air conditioning. Couldn’t sleep so I went out for a walk. I’ve swum here lots of times when the Masons have their pool parties. When I walked by here, I got the idea to… well, you know.”
“Hop the fence and skinny dip?” she said.
“I was going to keep my underwear on, but yeah. It was a dumb idea. I’m very, very sorry.”
Another pause. “Someone’s been breaking into houses around here, so I heard. That you?”
“Look,” I said, “for one, the house has an alarm. And if I was going to break in, wouldn’t I have tools or something? Be wearing a ski mask?”
“Hmm. Good point. Okay, get out and stand at the edge of the pool. Don’t run.”
“I’m not going to go running down the street naked, am I?” I said as I swam to the pool ladder and climbed out. I stood, hands covering my crotch, searching the dark for the woman.
“Why so shy?” she said. “You’re in good shape. Okay, I’m coming towards you. Don’t move an inch.”
She emerged from the dark, edging toward me cautiously in some kind of fighting stance. She was medium height with a slender build, a pretty face and hair falling to just below her ears. And she was completely, utterly, naked.
“I’ve been skinny dipping here every night since they left,” she said, watching my reaction.
She seemed to be close to my age or a little older. Her breasts were modest but perfect for her slender frame. The dim light gave her smooth skin a delicious soft glow. The gap between her thighs was in shadow, but hinted she wasn’t completely shaved.
“Wow,” she said, lips curling into a half smile. “Never seen a guy’s jaw actually drop. You’ve never seen a woman naked in real life, have you?”
I clamped my mouth shut and took a breath. “No… of course I have. I’ve had girlfriends. A girlfriend.”
“Why isn’t she with you?”
“She moved away for college last year. We decided to end things.”
“So now you’re lonely and walk around at 2:00am looking for places to rob?”
“Geez! I just wanted to swim!”
She straightened and relaxed, but still eyed me with caution. She gestured to my hands over my crotch. “Are you hiding a boner?”
I parted my hands and looked down. I was not excited.
“This is hardly a sexy situation,” I said.
She eyed my cock and slid her gaze over my body from head to toe. My face reddened, but I kept my hands by my sides. Let her look.
She gave an approving nod and said, “You’re right. This isn’t sexy. Nudity doesn’t equal sex.”
“Can I get dressed now? I’ll leave. You were here first.”
“Gonna leave a strange girl in your neighbor’s backyard? Maybe I’m the burglar.”
“I doubt you’d be naked.”
“So, maybe I’m a kinky burglar. But yeah, another good point.”
“Who are you?” I said. “I’ve never seen you around. Do you know the Masons?”
“I don’t live in the city,” she said. “Just visiting. Staying at a relative’s place.”
“Relatives who are okay with you going out at 2:00am to skinny dip?”
She shrugged. “Your parents don’t mind you doing the same?”
I explained my parents were traveling for their 20th anniversary and I had the house to myself, how my summer job hadn’t started and probably wouldn’t now that it was mid-July, but that would let me get a jump on studying for next semester at college except I hadn’t been able to sleep or concentrate because of the heat and my friends were all out of town and—
“Okay, okay,” she said, holding up a palm. “Don’t need your life story. You nervous or something? Or you always talk that much?”
“I just got caught trespassing and I’m standing naked in front of a gorgeous naked girl. So yeah, I’m a little nervous! Now, can I get dressed and get out of here?”
She regarded me for a long moment, amused, then said slowly, “You know… it’s a gigantic pool. Think we can be partners in crime and just swim? If you keep your distance.”
