Best Friend and Lover Ch. 10 by jakethomas, jakethomas

She hugged Rachel and said, “I am sorry I screwed up Jake before you came back into his life.”

Rachel touched her cheek and looked into her eyes. I know the feeling for the many times she had looked into my soul. She said, “Jake is right. You are beautiful.”

I had never seen Keisha be so emotional before, but her joy lifted my spirits. I knew this was the right decision to invite Keisha here.

————————————-

We went to bed late that night. We let Keisha stay in our room instead of kicking her to the couch. The following day, we introduced Keisha to Wayne and Sarah. Sarah was bouncing off the walls to meet Jake’s friend. She would have been bouncing off the walls anyway, but she was thrilled to meet Keisha.

Finally, after breakfast, we ended up back in our bedroom, and Keisha said, “Jake, I wanted to clear up this sex thing between us.”

“Don’t worry about it. I have Rachel now.”

“I know, but I don’t have someone now.”

I paused and considered this and wondered where she was going with this.

“Jake, I have been in love with you ever since we met. I was still in love with you when Jessica was around. I still have feelings for you. Maybe you are not happy to hear that, but–”

“Keisha, it is okay. That does not bother–”

Keisha interrupted me, “I still need to come to terms with it. I am not sure how to talk about this.”

Before I could respond, Rachel took me by the hand and led me to the door, pushed me out, and closed the door on me. I was not sure what to think, at first; there had not been a door between us for a long time. I was not offended, or anything; it just felt strange to be without Rachel.

Wayne looked over at me from the couch. “What’s up?”

“Rachel just kicked me out to talk with my old friend.”

“You will be fine. Just trust my sister to work her magic.”

I went over to Wayne to watch the game, where one of my favorite teams was playing. I had planned to watch it with Wayne, but forgot about it when Keisha came to visit.

I was so engrossed in the game that it startled me when the door opened, and Keisha asked me to come back in. When I entered, Rachel sat calmly at the desk with her sketchpad. Keisha spoke, and I turned to look at her.

“Jake, I was still in love with you when I left, but I am willing to accept that we will not be together. But I want you to have these to remember what we shared.”

Having confessed her feelings, Keisha handed me something Rachel had drawn. I was surprised to see that Keisha had posed nude for Rachel, and I had forgotten how gorgeous she was.

“You are amazing. Thank you for sharing these with me. You are still the most beautiful woman I know.”

Keisha was glowing from my praise of her and how beautiful the drawings were. She fulfilled her wish that I still would accept her. Her joy and excitement filled the room.

Keisha came over to me to hug me. Before we could embrace, I had to set the drawings down. I turned to Rachel and handed her the drawings. I said, “You got to see an ebony goddess after all. These are marvelous. Could you take these from me?” And then I nodded slightly.

Rachel took the drawings willingly and nodded back.

Seeing it was safe to hug me now, Keisha stepped forward and hugged me. We stayed like that for a few moments. She often liked to give me a long hug. She said softly, “Now, I can move on.”

I had sensed it before but never said anything before, “Is there someone else?”

She whispered, “Yes.”

“Go to him.”

“I will.”

We stepped away from each other. Satisfied, Keisha left to arrange lunch for everyone.

I looked back to Rachel, and the drawings were not in her hands anymore. She understood my nod. She had put the drawings away out of my sight. I never did see them again. I didn’t need to.

I held her hand and squeezed. “Thank you.”

Her lips curled in a sly smile, and she winked at me. I could already tell that she thought of some fun games for us next time.

Keisha ordered out for lunch, and everyone gathered around to share the food and excitement of our engagement. Sarah and Keisha were talking about flowers and dresses. Wayne spoke with me about some bachelor party.

Keisha finally brought up the big question we had been avoiding. “When are you planning to have the wedding?”

“Rachel and I were hoping to wait until Jessica comes back. We want Jessica to be part of this.”

That brought silence to the table. Everyone seemed to understand how we felt and expressed their understanding and sympathies–everyone except Keisha. That was why I had been avoiding it.

“Do I need to come and kick your ass again?”

“What? What do you mean?”

“You can’t wait for Jessica. Who knows when she will be back? Tonight? Tomorrow? Next week? A year? Ten years? We all miss her and love her. We will all gather around her and support her when she is back, but she will be too much of an emotional wreck to appreciate a wedding like you are hoping for.”

There was silence around the table, and we all looked down a little ashamed, even Rachel.

“Jake, Rachel, your friends, and family are right here. I took the weekend off. Let’s do it tonight. Or tomorrow, if you prefer.”

That suggestion completely caught us off guard. We were stunned with silence. Finally, Sarah jumped off her chair, “Yeah! I love weddings. But Rachel doesn’t have a wedding dress.”

Wayne added, “Don’t we need to schedule a preacher or someone to perform the wedding ceremony?”

“Or the courthouse,” Keisha added. Directing her comments to Wayne, “Can you find someone? Sarah, Rachel, and I will get a wedding dress for Rachel. Jake, you and Wayne can get her a wedding ring, a proper ring.”

Rachel had a mock, hurt look on her face as she cradled the ring on her finger. That won the laughter she was hoping for.

————————————————————

I stood by an altar in a small chapel wearing a rented tux that didn’t seem to fit quite right. I told Keisha she didn’t have to go through so much trouble. She would not hear of it. I could not believe I was standing here waiting to marry that little girl I knew those years ago. I wished my mother could have been there. I wished Jessica could have been there. But as Keisha pointed out, Rachel and I need to move on with our lives. Jessica needed someone to focus on her and not an upcoming wedding.

Rachel stepped out into the aisle. She was absolutely stunning. The dress, which consisted of a crop top and skirt, looked amazing. Knowing Rachel, she was probably going for inexpensive, but Keisha wanted it to look stylish. I suppose that was the compromise. Wayne had the honor of walking the bride down the aisle to the altar.

I thought Rachel would not wear makeup except some eyeliner. When she blinked, I noticed some purple eyeshade. When she came closer, I saw some lipstick. Someone had managed to put lipstick on her. Rachel’s hair looked like someone had tried to do something with her black mop of hair, but they had given up. I loved the way her hair looked anyway.

They gave Sarah the job of throwing rose petals which she was very good at. When Wayne and I went to look for rings, those were way out of my price range. I was about to give up finding the right ring when the perfect one blinded me with its brightness and brilliance. At the altar, I offered a cheap but shiny purple amethyst ring. For Rachel, that was almost the most moving part of the ceremony.
