This is part 2 of a partially true story. Part 1 explained the tension Rhea felt towards Shan. , The week went by fast, it was already friday evening. I had just finished making supper when Shan walked in.

“Hey, you look tired! How was the last day of the conference?” I enquired as I started to set the table for supper.

“Ah long, boring but good for business. I’m kidding it was good just tiring sitting those long hours. Something smells good, what’s for supper?” Shan replied as he took off his shoes and put away his briefcase.

“Spicy chicken pasta and some focaccia bread for later. Why don’t you go freshen up by the time I set the table?” I said whilst handing him a glass of juice.

“Sure I won’t be long, I’m starving. Hmm guava juice, still my favourite!” He replied whilst making his way to the hallway closet.

I busied myself setting the table and pouring some wine whilst Shan took a shower. I live in a one bedroom apartment, it’s a nice cozy place with a small kitchenette and a spacious living area which is split into a dining area and a lounge. Shan was sleeping on the couch which is a big comfy L shaped lounger. When I was done setting up I sat down in front of the tv with my glass of wine looking for something good to watch while waiting. After a little bit of scrolling I came across the latest episode of What We Do In The Shadows. This was one of my favourite series, it always makes me laugh no matter how silly it gets. I was laughing as Shan reappeared from his shower, the GQ business suit gone and replaced by silk boxers with dinosaurs on it and a tshirt. He sat down on the other side of the couch stretching before relaxing into his usual slouching position.

“You need to watch your posture dude, in your matured state that can’t be good!” I joked with him as I gave him a look from head to toe. His tshirt stuck to his body showing off his muscular chest and shoulders.

“You’re not that much younger than me remember. I mature like a fine wine if I do say so myself. Plus you seem to have matured as well since the last I saw you.” He quipped back whilst returning my stare, his eyes seem to pause on my chest a little longer than needed.

“You’ve got jokes old man, anyway let’s have supper. It’s my duty to serve the elderly the best I can.” I replied, giving him a mischievous grin.

We finished supper and came back to couch to watch more episodes of the show and finish our wine. Shan once again slouched in the corner of the coach as a sat cross legged on his left about a seat away.

“Hey Rhea would you mind massaging my back please? Those conference seats really made my back ache, I’m sure you have some tiger balm here too.” Shan asked as he moved closer to me on the couch and turning his back to me.

“Uh yeah ok sure. Let me go get the tiger balm.” I replied feeling a little surprised. He posed the question as if this wasn’t the first time we’d spent time together like this in at least a decade. Over the years my depression had taken over and changed me, I guess Shan didn’t realise that. It was too late for me to change my mind so I woke up to fetch the tiger balm.

When I got back to the couch Shan had returned to his slouching position but this time his tshirt was thrown over the back of the couch. I tried to avoid eye contact as I scanned his body. He wasn’t the scrawny guy I once knew, he had filled out well. My eyes travelled from his broad shoulders to his muscular chest. I caught myself biting my lip gently before quickly looking away hoping he hadn’t seen that. As I walked closer my eyes ventured further down, the familiar samurai warrior tattoo on his right side looked more pronounced and fierce than I remembered as it disappeared down his hip and under the waistband of his boxers. His pale and once skinny legs were now muscular and strong. Once I reached the couch and sat down next to him, he straightened up and turned his back to me.

My breath caught in my throat as I froze, I must have let out a small gasp as Shan immediately turned to face me. “What’s the matter Rhea, are you ok?” Shan asked with concern.

“Y- your… your tattoo!” I stuttered barely getting the words out.

“Oh yeah I got that just after I moved away from you’ll. I’m surprised you remember it. It’s one of your drawings.” Shan replied, his face relaxing as he turned nonchalantly.

My breathing was heavy, I didn’t know how to react. I’d spent many sleepless nights thinking about this, yearning for it. All I had wanted was a mere sign, anything that would jog my memory of this image so I could recreate an art piece which meant so much to me that I had cried for weeks after it went missing. There it was, staring me in the face. An intricate dragon on a bed of clouds, etched into Shans shoulder blade forever. The expression on the dragon’s face was what I could never remember when trying to recreate it. The emotions that I had represented in the dragons expression was of pain, loneliness but fierce and determined at the same time. I swallowed hard before carefully replying, “I thought I lost him forever, I was really upset when I couldn’t find him.”

“Oh, I’m sorry I didn’t realise you were attached to it.” Shan replied quietly without turning around. “Anyway, could you start at my lower back please.” He requested, clearly not bothered.

I took a deep breath and avoided looking at the tattoo. “Yeah ok.” I replied, just as nonchalantly. I kneeled behind him and began massaging him with tiger balm, working my hands hard against his lower back moving higher up trying to ease his pain. He moaned in pleasure as I massaged up his spine to his neck, my fingers and palms removing knots. When I reached his shoulders however I was forced to face my past, staring at that dragon in the eyes was difficult. I remembered the pain and depression I felt at that time, tears welled in my eyes. I paused before lightly caressing the dragon with my fingers as if I were really petting a loving pet. My heart fluttered, I could feel all those emotions again. I just wanted to calm an old friend, as if it was the dragon that was hurt and not me. This must have felt weird to Shan as I felt him stiffen under my touch and then turn to face me.

Fear and concern flashed across his face as he looked into my eyes. His hands went to my face wiping away tears. “Rhea! Oh my God are you ok? What’s the matter? Why are you crying? I’m so sorry!” Shan was frantic as he wiped away my tears. I don’t know how he did it but the next thing I knew was that I was in his arms, sitting over his lap, my face against his bare chest crying. He held me to him, wiping away tears and caressing my hair while telling me he is sorry.

“He meant so much to me. I could never recreate him exactly. Why did you take him away?” I told him between tears. I turned my head upward to look him in the eyes and said fiercely, “Why did you steal him from me?”

I felt his whole body stiffen, a look of terror flashed across his face before he hugged me tight, burying his face in my hair and replied, “Oh Rhea please forgive me I didn’t know he meant so much to you. I swear if I knew I would have never. I’m so sorry I didn’t ask either!”
