I met my future wife Donna at a flea market looking for deals on furniture and other amenities for her new apartment. That topic opened an entire conversation, and by the end of it, we had agreed to meet for coffee. A few dates into it, and the two of us were going steady and intimate. A few months later, she moved out of her apartment and in with me. Ironically, we sold off the stuff she found at the market that day.

It was around this time that Donna took me to meet her mother, Sara. Sara had married young, so she was only in her thirties. She and Donna’s father had divorced a long time ago, before Donna had even graduated high school, and she’d raised her alone after that.

Sara was breathtaking. Slightly taller than Donna, standing at an impressive 5’7″, and her hair was a honey blond which she sometimes streaked or tipped pink. She was a lot more inclined toward makeup and fashion than Donna was, always decked out in glittering jewelry, blouses that showed off the topmost of her cleavage along with other various parts of her skin, leggings or very short skirts, and all of it capped off with long heels or stacks.

Our first meeting went well; in fact, Sara expressed wide-eyed shock that Donna had “scored” a man like me. I spent the evening trying my best to be charming and gentlemanly, and Donna was all grins on our way home saying that I’d made an excellent first impression, and that she was sure I’d hit it off with her mother. She was right; Sara and I never had any issue with each other, though we only had minor interactions at first. We only had a chance to chat more frequently once wedding planning began leading up to the big date for Donna and me.

It was the night of the wedding, though, that things went off the rails.

Like a bullet train.

The wedding and reception went great, and everyone had a great time. At some point, Sara approached me for conversation, holding a huge glass full of wine.

“Congratulations, Kurt,” she said, beaming at me with those glistening emerald eyes of hers.

“Thanks,” I nodded, taking her hand and kissing it. “And thank you for entrusting me with your daughter. I promise I’ll take good care of her.”

Sara took another sip from her huge glass and nodded.

“You’re not gonna drink all that tonight, are you?” I asked, pointing at the almost mini-basketball-sized glass in her hands. “Didn’t you drive to the hotel?”

She rolled her eyes and scoffed. “Hush. I’m giving away my only child tonight,” she said. “Cut me some slack. Besides, I rented a room upstairs so that if I get a bit too tipsy, I’ll just stay the night.”

I smiled in defeat. “Smart. Okay, I stand corrected. And I repeat…don’t worry. I’ll make sure that ‘only child’ of yours only gets the best things in life.”

“I know that, honey,” she said sweetly. “She’s a big girl and much too old for me to protect, anyway. No, what I wanted to say was the opposite — and you’re as welcome to hear this as she is. If there’s any time you need to talk — about anything at all — you can come to me and I’ll help you as best I can. Even if it’s something you want to say without Sara.”

I nodded again. “Thanks, Sara. That’s really sweet. But I don’t know if I’d feel right going to my mother-in-law to talk secrets behind my wife’s back.”

“All couples have their secrets,” she told me before sipping from her drink. Again, I sensed there was a bit of a bitter past there, but I refused to pry. “And you’re like a son to me now. You can talk to me about anything.”

I gave a deliberately-awkward laugh. “Don’t make it sound like I’d cheat on her or something.”

I expected her to laugh or, at worst, give me the stare of death. But neither happened. Sara merely swallowed her drink and her green eyes just looked through me. “But I know affairs happen. If that time ever comes, and you make a — ‘mistake’, it doesn’t need to be the end of a marriage. Not if you still love and want to make it up to her.”

I thought about what she said for a moment, and though it wasn’t exactly a pleasant subject, what she said kinda made sense.

I sighed. The subject was way too heavy for me to even consider on my wedding night of all times, so I decided to joke around to lighten the mood. Desperate for anything, I chose to tease Sara’s choice of wording.

I decided to joke with her a bit. “Sara, I thank you for the offer. If I ever decide I want to make a ‘mistake’, I’ll come to you.”

She smiled and nodded from my acceptance. It didn’t hit her right away. “Well, thank you for being mature about this topic, Kurt. I knew you were reasonable enough to–”

Then, she finally realized what I’d said. “Wait… what?”

I smiled devilishly and continued teasing. “Come on, Sara. With a body like yours, if I ever thought about cheating, you’d be the first on my list.”

“Please,” she scoffed again. “What could a young, handsome man like you possibly find attractive about me?!”

I couldn’t stop my laughter. “You’re kidding, right?! You’ve got a face like pure heaven and the best body I’ve ever seen…no exaggeration.”

I expected her to laugh back. Or scold me. Or something of that order.

Instead, she called my bluff.

She picked up her drink from the counter and downed it in one gulp, letting the liquid courage take her. She took one more glance around the room before turning toward me and pressing a deep, sexy kiss right on my lips.

A billion things went through my mind at that moment, most of them various levels of disbelief and questions of “What the hell am I doing?!” — but at least one of those billion things was curiosity. A desire to see where this would lead. And, it was that feeling which eventually won out.

“Jesus…” Sara moaned, pulling away. “This was even more of a mistake than I thought…” she said, as her eyes scanned eagerly over my body.

I touched my lips, shocked. “Sara –?”

She gave a timid glance as she peered up at me again. “Do you really think I’m that beautiful…?”

Somewhere inside, the part of me who should have seen where this was going was screaming not to answer that question. To just walk away and pretend that we’d never spoken.

But I couldn’t do that…and lying to her by saying “No” was even more impossible. There was no way, gazing down into those twinkling emerald stars and those pouty, quivering lips, that the next words out of my mouth could be any other response.

But the enthusiasm behind it even shocked me.

“Hell yes.”

Immediately, Sara dug through her purse, fishing for something. A few moments later, she produced a card — a copy of her room card in the hotel.

Staring up at me, a lustful gaze burning straight into my soul, she said:

“If you come upstairs, we can… talk further.”

As she walked away, watching me from the corner of her eye, she sashayed her hips in such a way that the plump globes of her ass bounced through the material of her sequin dress, hypnotizing my gaze and keeping my focus on her entirely until she disappeared from my sight.
